Dance of Tok
It is my passion to try and capture the essence of the horse with minimal lines. This painting is still one of my personal favorites because it is simple yet so powerful. It is also a reflection of my personal life, striving for simplicity but power of focus towards the people, horses, and passions that I love. If you are drawn towards this painting I would imagine you also feel a sense of magic in life’s simple things, the smell of your horse’s fur, the sound of him happily munching on hay, or perhaps the feeling of that perfect canter transition. I have to remind myself to take notice of these things because they are the nectar of life.

About the Process
We were blessed with a sunny day in April of 2017 to paint for photographer Kimberly Chason. I am forever grateful that she captured the entire process and that Rovandio was feeling in flow that day. I used a variety of brushes and my bare hands with acrylic paint and water to create the desired effect.
When we were finished, Rovandio’s hoofprint was painted onto a piece of cloth and transferred to the canvas.
Each painting/riding session includes walk, trot, canter, flying changes, sidepass, rein-back, and piaffe. Rovandio is currently 20 years old so I keep his sessions short and sweet so I do not stress his body. I want him to enjoy painting and have him stay sound as long as possible. Each painting is an accumulation of two decades and the thousands of hours we have spent together.
